3D Laser Scanning: As-Built Reality Capture for BIM

This Viewpoint article by Scott Page, who specializes in architecture, fabrication, and laser scanning, demystifies reality capture from 3D laser scanners and the “point clouds” they generate, and explores the state of the art of how this technology integrates with BIM. It also looks at the formats and standards for point clouds, and presents a “wish-list” of how laser scanning technology should evolve going forward.

  1. Scott, it’s unfortunate that you didn’t look at the dedicated point cloud tools, rather than just CAD/BIM applications that only lightly handle imported point clouds. I don’t want to sound like a commercial, but since this article focuses on specific software I think it’s appropriate to point out other highly relevant tools. I would encourage you (and readers) to look at Bentley Pointools and Bentley Descartes for point cloud manipulation on infrastructure projects, these are both extremely capable industry leading applications that explicitly focus on helping AEC projects use point clouds (including in workflows that utilize software from our competitors). You may also be interested in our unique ProjectWise Point-cloud Services that stream point clouds to our information modeling applications like MicroStation and AECOsim Building Designer and our design review applications such as Bentley Navigator. This capability lets you use huge multi-scan sets in real time, and also offers upcoming capability for point cloud differencing and point cloud vs. point cloud vs. model clash detection.
